Installing a SureFlap Microchip Cat Door in Glass

To install a SureFlap Microchip Cat Door in a window you will also need our mounting adaptor kit. The microchip cat door is supplied with a pack of mounting screws and instructions. It is powered by four AA batteries. We recommend that you use good quality batteries and starting with a fresh set will ensure that you don’t need to change them for up to a year. After you have installed the batteries press the memory button once to put SureFlap into the learn mode.

Now take some of your cat’s favourite dry food and put it inside the tunnel close to the door. The aim is to get your cat to put its head in the tunnel as they would do when they come home. They must put their head up to the door to activate the reader which communicates with the microchip. When the microchip number has been learnt the indicator lamp stops flashing, but the catch will not close until your cat moves away from the tunnel. Now each time your cat puts it’s head into the tunnel up to the door it’s chip is read and the catch opens until they come into the house or move away outside.

Whether your installation is in a single or a doubled glazed window you will need the help of a qualified glazier or fitter to cut the hole. The ideal hole size is 212mm in diameter but the mounting adaptor is suitable for hole sizes up to 260mm diameter.

Applying sealant to a SureFlap mounting adaptorThe mounting adaptor box contains two identical adaptors; one is for use inside the house and one for outside. The adaptors are bonded to the window with an all weather silicon sealant and held firmly in place by the mounting screws. Apply a bead of sealant to each of the mounting adaptors as we are showing on one of them here.

We are now ready to install the cat door in the window. We start by putting one of the adaptors over the tunnel. We recommend that you get somebody to help you complete the installation by holding the main assembly inside the house.

The tunnel is then pushed through the hole and the main assembly pushed firmly up to the glass to compress the sealant. Now take the second adaptor and slide it over the tunnel with the sealant facing the window.

Then slide the external frame over the tunnel and use the appropriate length of screw to hold the cat door in place. For a double glazed unit this is the medium length of screw and for a single glazed unit it is the shortest screw. Once you have are happy that the cat door is held firmly in position you can insert the two plastic screw caps.

Once you have completed the installation your cat can come and go as they please. As soon as your cat puts their head in the tunnel and activates the reader the catch drops down to unlock the door. The catch will stay open as long as your cat is in the tunnel or within range of the reader.
